Hold on to your seat, because I am about to introduce you to the number one thing I had in my hospital bag: Fitkicks shoes. Like, all-the-nurses-asking-where-I-got-those kind of awesome. I-am-buying-these-for-all-my-pregnant-friends kind of awesome.
In those final days (cough months cough) of pregnancy, my feet were the victims of terrible swelling. Wearing compression socks? Did not matter. Elevating feet at regular intervals? Nope, no difference. Lord help me if it rained, then I was doomed for sure. It was miserable. Top off this world record level swelling with the fact that I had an epidural, and by the time I was allowed to walk again I was quite distressed after one look at my self-proclaimed “sausage toes.”
It was lucky for me that I had packed my FitKicks- these miracles of footwear stretched even to accommodate my double-sized feet. The non-slip sole kept me steady even on well-polished hospital floors. And the fun colors (like these Teal Fitkicks) added some pizzazz to my otherwise black on black hospital attire. All the nurses on my floor thought these were just the cleverest thing; they all wanted pairs for themselves and their friends!
And can I share with you the best part? When we got home from the hospital I threw them away. That’s right, my beloved fitkicks were so affordable that when my new-mom brain reasoned that those shoes were covered in every disease known to man after traipsing around the whole hospital that I had no guilt at all tossing them out and switching to my back up pair. (In retrospect I surely could have washed them, but lets me honest: being home with a brand new baby makes you a little paranoid.) So do yourself a favor and order a pair or three of these and go ahead and tuck them into your hospital bag. You can thank me later. (While you are at it, order a pair for Dad, too. He will also appreciate the comfort.)
